Not given After having my appendix removed, the pathology report diagnosed me as having pseudomyxoma peritonei, which is a very rare disease.  My surgeon, recommended I see Dr. Holbrook, and I did.  Dr. Holbrook reviewed the disk of my CT scans himself (he did not bother to read the radiologist's report) and pointed out to my husband and I on his computer screen what he interpreted as mucin on the top of my liver and possibly on both kidneys. He recommended I have full cytoreductive surgery (including removal of all my female organs, my omentum, and possibly part of my colon and belly button), along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.  This surgery would have taken anywhere from 5-17 hours.  It would have required me to be in intensive care for up a a week, the hospital for up to a month and full recovery would take 3-6 months.....that is IF I survived the surgery.  My husband and I had many business commitments at the time and we asked Dr. Holbrook if we could delay the surgery a month or so.  He recommended I have another CT scan to see how far the disease had progressed.  I did, and had the results sent to Dr. Holbrook.  Upon receipt of the results, Dr. Holbrook's office requested I send him the disk of the original CT scan to compare it to.  I did, and I never heard a word back from him.  In the meantime, I went to another doctor for a second opinion.  He requested I bring the pathology slides from my appendix, and both CT scans.  He ran blood tests to check for cancer markers.  He, and his team determined that I did not require the surgery or chemotherapy, and in fact that I had been misdiagnosed!  My precautionary  6 month follow up MRI showed NO SIGNS OF DISEASE REOCCURANCE.

It horrifies me to think of what I would have had to endure, physically, emotionally and financially, had I taken Dr. Holbrook's recommendation and had the surgery NEEDLESSLY.

I have no doubt that he has helped many people who really needed it, but It scares me to death how many people he has put under the knife needlessly.
