2011

Dr Basile performed my surgery  (Lapidus arthrodesis for hallux valgus & osteoarthritis) in mid December of 2011. In other words, he operated on my big toe & the next toe to make them behave... & keep me from limping. I left the hospital on crutches & with an aircast boot, on which I could put limited weight. In 2 weeks, I no longer needed the crutches; I was walking with the airboot alone for the next 3 1/2 weeks.
Less than 6 weeks after the surgery, I gave up the boot to normal shoes. My foot was still swollen, but it fit in sneakers & all my leather boots.
By 8 weeks post-surgery, I was walking a mile...although more slowly than I used to.
I can't say that this kind of surgery is a day at the beach, but it was, in my experience, pretty much as Dr Basile had described it would be. He was able to tell me what I would experience for pain after the surgery (which was controlled by medicaton)  as well as the length of time it would likely take me to recover.
When it came time to remove the pin from my foot, he was accurate about what I would experience during the procedure.
He has a confident yet very gentle bedside manner, but even more than that:  If Dr Basile hasn't experienced all of these things himself (which I doubt he has), he has listened very carefully to his mostly female patients for this particular surgery. Any male physician who listens so carefully to women (& is so gentle) deserves a 10 in my scoring!

2010 When I finally decided to see a doctor about my 'displaced big toe' I went about the selection process by researching local doctors.  I chose Dr. Philip Basile for the following reasons:

1. Knowing I would need surgery I wanted a podiatric surgeon who could see the process through    from beginning to end.
2. He's Chief of Division of Podiatry at the Mount Auburn Hospital.
3. Most importantly, Dr. Basile is Board Certified.
4. He's an instructor at Harvard Medical School.

All the credentials I was looking for and then some.

Well, I'm happy to say that I made a great choice in Dr. Basile.  He recently performed surgery on my left foot to correct the dislocated first metatarsal bone caused by a bunion on my big toe.  After 3 weeks I was already out of the boot and into a post-op sandal.  Even the incision is almost completely healed. He's down to earth and very pleasant to talk with.  Most of all, he did a fantastic job on my foot!  I highly recommend Dr. Philip Basile.  And Dr. Basile, if you have an opportunity to read this, I want to thank you for everything and you can be sure I'll come to you with any future foot ailments.

2008 I had bunion surgery on my left foot in June of 2008.  My experience with Dr. Basile and the staff at BIDMC was outstanding.  Dr. Basile is friendly and competent.  He always expressed concern for my well-being and fully explained the surgical procedure and what I could expect for recovery. I am planning to have surgery on my right foot in May of 2009 and feel confident that my experience will be the same.  I would recommend Dr. Basile to anyone with foot ailments of any kind.
