I know that he deserved it, but it was a sad day when Dr. Yocom retired. Even though he was a chiropractic physician, he was our trusted family doctor for many years. He is a very intelligent quick thinker, but I don't think that the man knows how to hurray. Everyone got as much time as was needed. He treated me for back pain a couple of times over 15 years ago, and said that he was not satisfied with the results and wanted to do more tests. I balked a little, but caved in to make him happy. I am glad that I did, because it saved my life. He ran the tests, and diagnosed my ovarian cancer. I was shocked because I had a clean bill of health from my gyn within two months. He referred me to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa where I was surprised that this small town chiropractor was known to them. The doctor there said that the reason that Dr. Yocom diagnoses more ovarian cancer than many doctors is because he looks for it. I was treated successfully and am alive today because of Dr. Yocom's quick and accurate thinking. Other medical specialists who he sent us to from time to time also spoke very highly of him. When our kids were younger Doc has made several late or middle of the night house calls when one or both of them were sick. I don't think that he even ever charged us for the house calls, and I can remember him saying that he too was a parent and knows what it is like to worry about a sick child. His boys (who he delivered at home) would often ride their bikes to his office. He always took time for them and would always hug them and tell them that he loved them when they left. I remember one day he went out into the parking lot, got tools from the trunk of his car and adjusted the carburator or something on his youngest son's moped. He walked back into the office, and said 'thanks for being patient and waiting, but know what !! nothing makes my heart smile as much as the smile on my kid's face'. He washed up (and I think changed shirts) and went back to work treating patients. Someone in the waiting room said that what he did for his son was nice and most doctors would not do that. He said 'doctor is what I do but it is not who I am - if I am anything, I am just plain old Dad'.  He must have an encyclopedia for a brain as he remembered everyone and everything. Dr. Yocom when he practiced was very kind, very humble, very gentle, very understanding, and very brilliant in a quiet and respectable way. Since he retired, it is just not the same. Other doctors just aren't the same. We wish Doc well in his retirement and hope that he is enjoying it. I know that he is an avid airplane pilot and does a lot of flying. May God keep him safe and may he enjoy the rewards of having served so well for so many years. He was definately a Marcus Welby kind of doctor, and we miss him.
