I really do NOT like going to any dentist, and for many years I skipped it. Finally I had to grow up and start going regularly, and I wound up going to Dr. Dubin more than 20 years ago and ever since, even after I moved. He's a consumate professional, and someone I trust to work on my teeth; that's saying a lot right there. I'm apalled at the number of negative comments here, because I've never had any experiences remotely like that. I think one of the issues that some people have is that they want a dentist who bubbles over with good cheer. Dr. Dubin is a thoughtful, quiet guy who is concentrating on several patients at one time and paying attention to what he's doing. I don't need or want him to have long conversations about the weather, I need him to run his office on time--I wish ANY of my doctor offices ran their offices as well as he does--and do a professional job on my teeth. I do think sometimes he's so deep in the zone that he forgets that you might not understand everything that's going on, so I've learned to ask (politely because I'm not going to aggravate anyone working in my mouth!) and he'll tell me what's going on. A trivial example from maybe 10 years ago. He said 'we're going to take a shade'. That didn't mean anything to me, and didn't quite sound like a normal English sentence. I asked him what that meant, and he was taken aback because it seemed obvious to him. It wasn't that he didn't WANT to explain it to me, it's that he couldn't understand how I could possibly not understand a simple sentence like that. He wasn't obnoxious, he just couldn't understand what I didn't understand. Turns out he meant match color samples against my teeth so he could order a crown that matched exactly. Ohhhhh. I have heard him being 'rude' to some of his assistants, but in every case it seemed that they were not on top of their game. He had to ask for things that were routine, theyhanded him the wrong things, and they were unable to follow what was going on. Recently one of his sons started working there, and I was amazed at the difference. Dr. Dubin would start to ask for something, then look up and find it was already waiting inches from my mouth. That really showed me the difference between higly competent help and ordinary help. I liked most of his assistants in the past as individuals, but a couple of them made me very nervous because I could tell they weren't doing a very good job and they were upsetting Dr. Dubin. I do NOT want anyone upsetting my dentist; it's hard enough for me to be there in the first place. I do have an incident to share from many years ago, maybe 15 now. I was in the waiting room, having arrived early, and he walked out of the back looking mad. I didn't like THAT at all. He was walking around his office area and then back to the small lab area. I heard him mention a few things, but I didn't get what the problem was. Regardless, I was thinking that this did not look good. When it was my turn, I asked him if was getting a filling today since I had a couple appointments scheduled and wasn't sure what work was going to be done on this visit. He said something that I didn't like, like whether I was testing him or something (might have been joking but as I said I do NOT want a dentist who jokes!) and I got up out of the chair and said 'I'm outta here!' He was surprised. I said, 'Listen, I wouldn't let someone cut my HAIR with the attitude that you have, much less mess around in my mouth!' He laughed and said 'Yeah, I see your point.' He then explained why he was mad. There had been a screw up at the lab and a bridge for one of his patients didn't arrive like it was supposed to. So he was upset that his patient was going to have wait another week when he really needed his dental work. And he was wondering whether his office couldn't have caught this problem earlier than today. After we talked for a few minutes, I said OK, are you feeling better now, and let him go ahead. I'm saying this because had I walked out I would have been saying bad things about him and I would have missed years of good dental care. I wasn't HAPPY that day, but once I realized that he was going to set aside the other issue to focus on me, I was fine. In addition to routine cleanings and an occasional filling, I've had to have several root canals and a crown or two. I've never felt that he was gouging, but I also don't think he's the least cost dentist around. Given how I feel about dentists, cost is not my highest priority, although it might be if I felt it was out of line. The office was helpful in suggesting replacement dental insurance after a job change, too, telling me the service at the least cost that provided the most benefit. I do think he's particularly adept at shaping work, he works quickly, he is EXCELLENT at injections so I never feel anything, and on the one or two occasions in more than 20 years when I have felt something, he's stopped immediately and given me more anesthetic. A few years ago I decided to ask him about Invisalign. He hadn't pressured me about that at all. After I started talking about that, one of his assistants seemed a little too gung ho, but then she knew my teeth. I thought it over for a month or two and in my mid 50's I decided to go ahead. I was very pleased with the results. After my teeth were straight I started thinking about veneers--again, my idea, not theirs. Dr. Dubin was able to discuss my options and specifically what would work with my particular teeth. He strongly suggested that I only get the uppers done and not uppers and lowers, which is what I thought I wanted. I did go elsewhere for a second opinion, since there are options and I wanted to compare different brands, etc. The other dentist had some spiffy software that would show you what your new teeth might look like, imposed on your photo, but I decided that Dr. Dubin seemed to more knowledgeable. And yeah, I thought the other guy was a little friendlier, too. But for sure Dr. Dubin gave me his professional opinion, even though it cut the cost of the job in half. I respected that. I've also noticed over the years that a lot of other people seem to have much more severe problems with their teeth--some is neglect and some is just unfortunate genetics I guess. I do think that many people have incidents where a weak tooth later gives way. I'm pretty paranoid about my teeth, so I really try to take care of them. Perhaps the rest is just good luck, but I've never had to have anything redone, unless it was many years later. Fillings and crowns don't last forever, but in my case they seem to last for a very long time. I've also witnessed a lot of OK kids there, and one or two incidents where I've heard them say, listen we can't work with Susie, she's just too upset. Please bring her back in a year and we'll be glad to work with her. They definitely do NOT want parents in the back--I understand the need to comfort your child, but there isn't enough room for extra people in any of the 'bays', and it's intrusive on their other patients as well. So I can understand some people being upset about that, but I can also understand Dr. Dubin only being able to work with reasonably cooperative kids. The bottom line here is that I think Dr. Dubin does an excellent job, which is why I keep going back to him. If you want a jolly dentist, then perhaps you should go elsewhere. If you want someone focused on what he's doing, he's great! |
