I saw Dr. Berry a few times while I was pregnant with my second daughter in 2008. I was rotating through the doctors during my pregnancy and had no problems with any of them. However, I became pregnant again a few months ago and saw Dr. Berry for my first prenatal appointment. I have had three previous c-sections, which he knows, and he asked if I wanted a tubal ligation during the c-section for this pregnancy. Although we would definitely be done having children, I told him that I couldn't make a decision about a tubal with 100% certainty until closer to my due date. I felt that his manner changed at that point, and he became very rude and dismissive of my various questions and concerns. When he performed an ultrasound to check the dates, he discovered that the baby was measuring only 6 weeks, with a heartbeat, instead of the 8.5 I was expecting. I was charting my fertility and know the exact dates that my period began and that I ovulated, but Dr. Berry dismissed my knowledge and said that I probably had my dates wrong. He obviously believed that I was too stupid to know my own body, and he showed no compassion for my belief that I was likely to miscarry. When I asked if I were to need a D&C, and if that would affect my ability to conceive and carry a fourth child to term, Dr. Berry became even more rude. He said that although the risks go up, if I was determined to conceive again, he couldn't stop me, but that he would 'certainly' insist that I have my tubes tied afterward. I have no idea why he was so concerned with the state of my tubes. I'm supposed to go back next week for follow-up bloodwork to confirm what's going on with this pregnancy, but I plan to ask to see one of the other doctors in the practice - and as soon as this nightmare is over, I'm taking my business - and my body - elsewhere. |
