2006 This doctor may be a specialist in his profession but definitely needs an education on how to treat patients with respect, dignity and compassion. He needs to come down off of the pedestol he has put himself on and treat patients that are not in the best of health with caring and understanding -- not scolding. Also, he needs to hire an assistant who thinks likewise. His attitude has possibly rubbed off on her. Thanks.

I totally disagree...Dr. Hartjen is FORTHRIGHT...nothing more.  Personally, I would MUCH rather have a Dr. 'tell me like it is' rather than beat around the bush!  I'm not paying for bedside manner, I'm paying for his unabashed opinion!

Fortunately for you, you didn't get the same kind of treatment from Dr. Hartjen as I did.  It's not about 'beating around the bush' but having compassion and understanding and being tactful in your approach with patients and seeing that they get the best care in the hospital after surgery.   My experience had such a negative impact that I'm not extremely apprehensive (maybe even phobic) about having any other surgery.  Many people have spine surgery that also have other illnesses that have to be taken into consideration.  I stand by my previous statement and let it be known that I am an honest and caring person and treat people as I want to be treated.

I agree totally with Libra This doctor operated on me did't even show up the next day to see how I was doing. Here is some advice don't ask him the same question twice. I did and he basically yelled at me for doing so. I'm sorry Mr Hartjen my spine is the only one I have and I don't think you or anyone else can give me another one so I do have questions. When someone cut on me they better show up the next day to see how I am doing I don't need the doctor yelling at me after surgery because of the questions I asked. You should be a veterinarian take my advice do little dogs with no teeth stay away from big dogs with big teeth they will chew you a new AS_.
Take my advice after surgery when your feel ling bad this is one guy you don't wan't to be talking to.

Dr. Hartjen did lumbar surgery on me in '95 and I welcomed his honesty and professional attitude, as well as his marvelous skills as a surgeon.  I am returning to him to have more spinal surgery later this month and I have no anxieties about him, the surgery and the recovery period.
Many times the same question may be posed to a physician several times and it becomes a tedious affair repeating the same information over and over again.  Next time you see a doctor, bring a small pad of paper with your questions written on it  and write down the answers as he gives them to you.  It is well known that patients forget or misinterpret much of the information given to them.  If you write it down, you have it for future reference.  Maybe the good doctor is not really to blame.
I would recommend Dr. Hartjen to anyone that needs great care.
I sincerely doubt that Dr. Hartjen missed you on your first day post-operativlely.  He's just too detail oriented  and his concerns for his patients is real.  He may have come by early in the morning before seeing patients or going back to the OR, and you were not awake.  Naturally he will go to the notes to see how well you fared; if your medication is adequate for for your comfort; any problems you may have encountered; etc.  He also has the hospitalist to give him any further information.
I don't know about you, but I really wouldn't be happy if a doctor woke me out of post- operative sleep to see if I was happy.  Patients need their sleep to help in their recovery during this critical period and Dr. Hartjen has multiple avenues to use to get an accurate report.  Or maybe he didn't want to answer the same questions over and over again.
